in spending cuts, this discussion about tax increases is just foley. it is absolutely ridiculous. harry reid said that the boehner mr. was dead on arrival. it wasn't going to pass the senate anyway. so, boehner didn't get the support of his members, enough at least and it would have been a vote for not because the senator would have said thanks, no thanks. we are going to have the leverage and we will shove whatever you want down your throats whether you like it or not. the whole situation was kind of ridiculous in the beginning. >> instead of plan b it was sort of plan b.s. it was dead on arrival. it wasn't a bold plan. you need to from o'reilly factor bold plan with fresh faces. personally do i think we need to look at new leadership. john boehner has done a fine job but we have to do some changes. we have to have changes. we have omake new face and we have to have different language. let's face it the last four years the team has been playing together. the folks have not been able to get along. nothing is happening in washington, d.c. it's gridlock. so we have got to change something. we

anybody is actually doing anything right now. gregg: what about harry reid? what's his, does he have anything at all maybe towards the end of the week he will put on the table? i've been hearing he will put to a vote an extension of the bush tax cuts for anybody making under $250,000 a year, extend unemployment benefits for some 2 million people that are about to lose them. what are you hearing? >> right. he sounded pretty pessimistic this morning but that could change and there's, kind of a fight, procedurally between the house and the senate in a sense that if reid originates a bill in the senate that would do what you said, people in the house say, well that would be unacceptable because the constitution requires revenue bills to originate in the house. but there is this bill that the house did pass a while back extending tax cuts for everybody. the senate could actually amend that bill. it originated in the house and then send it back and actually get somewhere. you have to remember that john boehner actually gave in on the principle of raising tax rates for the highest earners.

harry reid. he gave a statement saying he expected republicans to come back after christmas before the end of the year to try again. mr. boehner gave his own statement saying maybe something could break the rules a little bit and start in the senate to fix the problem instead of starting with his side in the house. if that happens and they can put something together on the senate side that can pass the senate, and that can earn all of nancy pelosi's 193 democrats in the house, they would need, then, 25 republicans to defect and vote with all the democrats to save the country. to save us at least from a self-inflicted recession. they would need 25 republicans. among the republicans who did side with john boehner last night on one bill that he was able to pass before it all fell apart, among the republicans who were on john boehner's side last night were exactly 25 republicans who are not coming back to congress after this year, who are gone as of january and on whom the usual republican centrifugal forces do not apply. if those 25 republicans defect, then something they end up cooki

tomorrow afternoon. host: both majority leader harry reid and mitch mcconnell both expressed optimism after the meeting with the president. what is the basis of their optimism? is this a sign we might be one step, two steps, through step closer to a deal? caller: it does appear we are a step closer to a deal. they are talking about doing is extraordinarily popular stuff. except for the big marquee item, which is letting taxes rise on the wealthy. the rest of the stuff they are looking at doing the stuff they do all the time. it is extending an expiring tax policies. they know the benefit businesses. extent college tuition credits. there are looking at protecting people from the alternative minimum tax. it is all very urgent stuff that needs to be done. there are only two remotely controversial pieces of this, that is what to do with the estate tax and to how to define the wealthy people whose taxes are going to go up. the rest of it is, basically protecting people from tax hikes. i guess extending unemployment benefits and sometimes controversial for the republicans. it appears to have agre
